Being a teacher, especially here in Africa appears so demoralizing that most times a lot of teachers feel ashamed to be publicly identified with the profession.  Some others are already quitting the teaching job.

And the reason for this is not far-fetched.

Aside the societal disdain and ridicule for this noble profession, teachers especially in Third World countries (Africa is core) are poorly remunerated. While many teachers take pride in raising great minds in all walks of life, the poor salary structure of teachers is the most discouraging aspect of the job they do.

Unfortunately, this anomaly is not going to be changed in the near future. So, what should teachers do to earn a good living while still performing their divinely-assigned task of raising young minds for greatness?

Teacher, look no further, the rod is with you.

Many teachers are like the Biblical Moses who had a rod that could change the fate of a nation, yet he with the people of Israel was lamenting and confused, until God spoke:

                “Use your rod”!

Dear teacher, do you know you have a lifetime wealth-building contents with you?

ü  With your wealth of intellect that has helped you teach and bring up great minds, you can build wealth. Convert it to a written content and make money out of it.

ü  Hey! What about that lesson note! You prepared it, you taught it in a way that even the dumbest child in the class could understand it.  Many are out there waiting for you to teach them, while they give you a return check.


This is the exact reason I am writing this post. If you finish reading it and fails to do something in the positive, then you have no right to ever complain of ‘my take home pay cannot take me home’!
And I choose to talk on video lesson creation because that is where your impact as a teacher could be felt more. With video lesson, your content is more practical than theoretical.

So how do you make money using what you already have?:

  • ·         Your lifetime experience as a teacher

Steps:

1.    Create content

Like I mentioned above, as a teacher you are rich with contents. Think of your wealth of intellectual knowledge. Think of your classroom experiences and how you handled them over the years; think of the notes you have made on the subjects you’ve taught. What else are you looking for in content? Meanwhile, your content must have the following features:

-          Quality and original content: Remember what you are about to do is what many others have been doing. So, how do you make impact in the midst of such competitive market? Be original and let your content be rich enough to answer your readers’ questions.

-          Arrange your content: As a teacher, you understand the importance of preparing a lesson plan. What you are about to do now is not different from your routine lesson plan preparation. You can’t make a good video lesson without arranging your content in a storyboard (a form of lesson plan). This is what guides you when making your video so that you don’t lose focus or get loss of what to say next.


-          Make it more practical: You must create your content in a way that presents it as practical guide to solving problems rather than academic theories.


2.    Prepare Your Slide
For teachers, I will suggest you create your video lesson as a slide presentation rather than showing your face. The people out there need more of the contents in your videos than your face.  One more thing: Let your slide for video lesson be less wordy, but with more images that will explain your contents. Bearing this in mind, I suggest you use any of these slide tools:

-          MS PowerPoint slide: If you have Microsoft office installed in your system, you probably have this with you free.

-          Google slide: This is a free presentation tool available for every Gmail holder.


-          Canva: Canva gives you a whole world of design including a presentation tool to prepare your video lesson. And it’s always free to have an account with www.canva.com.


3.    You need a Video creation tool
This is what you need to transform your content to that video lesson you’ve been dreaming about. There are many of them out there, both free and premium. You can always find them when you search for it on Google. But I will recommend Screencast-o-matic for you. I am using it, and it is superb and very affordable.  They give you a free 14-day trial to experience how it works. With the free version, your maximum video record time is 15 minutes. But with the premium version, your recording time is unlimited. Guess what, the paid version is only $18/year. 4.    Set up a Youtube Channel
Setting up Youtube channel is not a rocket science. Youtube is a free tool for every Gmail account holder. The most important thing here is to upload quality videos and do that consistently until you have subscribers who are now regularly looking forward to your contents.

The following tips should guide you:

-          Add keywords to help people find your channel (Keywords must be relevant to your contents). For instance, if your Youtube channel is on Classroom Tips for teachers, your keywords could be; classroom tips, teaching success, education etc.

-          Upload high quality, but moderate contents. Do that regularly.


-          Get subscribers by sending video out to the social media; interact with viewers and subscribers.


5.    Monetize Your Videos
This means allowing Youtube place ads on your video, while you earn on any click. How do you do that?

-          Go to your account on youtube.com, click on ‘My Channel’; click on ‘Video Manager’ on the top bar; click channel and enable monetization; check ‘monetization with ads’ box.

-          Get at least ten thousand total views to start earning.


-          Create a free adsense account at www.adsense.com

-          Check your analytics to know how your content is performing.


-          Market your videos- on blog, social contents etc

-          Become a Youtube partner (optional)


-          Increase your Youtube revenue with Supp.me service free.



6.    Create a Blog for your Video Lesson
Part of your monetization process must include having a blog where you drive the real traffic that would eventually turn to real life subscribers and lifetime viewers that will multiply your income in video lesson.

21st Century Realities and the Imminent Collapse of the Conventional School System

Why the Offline Brick and Mortar School System will Collapse

The imminent collapse of the conventional brick and mortar school system is not just a prediction, but an inevitable phenomena that would be both striking and startling that those who are not prepared for it would live to regret their indifference.
Let me show you some of the factors that will lead to the collapse of the current system and structure of our schools.


#1. The collapse of the macroeconomic structures with its attendant consequences.

I have been saying this for some time now as an intuitive management scholar and financial analyst. Thanks goodness, I again heard Dr Kiyosaki repeated the same line recently: the macroeconomic structures of the world is collapsing, and there is nothing that can be done to remedy it at the governmental level, especially with the kind of government that is not ready to tolerate the transfer of wealth to its citizens. The reason for this is a discourse for another day.

But one thing stands out. The turn of the century comes with it a shift in paradigm for a reason only the gods may be able to interpret. Wealth creation and economic control is now in the hands of individuals and no more in a central government coffer.

What’s the consequence?

High cost of living, leading to high production cost. Then government will levy high taxation on organizations, including non-incorporated outfits. School owners and managers will increase fees for tuition in order to break even…

Guess what!

Parents will withdraw their wards from schools…

But it doesn’t stop there.


#2. Unprecedented Security Challenges.

With the collapse in the macroeconomic structures of nations, comes the high cost of living. There will be mass collapse of companies as a result of insolvency. There will be mass sacking of workers. There will be so much suffering in the land. Then with the unabated corruption of government officials, only one thing will follow…

High rate of crime!

I tell you, the crime rate in the coming years will be so much that kidnappers will target buses carrying school children; they will even go to schools in broad daylight to kidnap school children.

The reaction…

Parents will withdraw their wards from school.


#3. The continual upsurge in Online Solution.

Some might ask: If parents withdraw their wards due to high tuition fee or security challenges, what happens to their children’s education?

§  Reduction in teacher-parent confrontation: The usual bickering we experience between teachers and parents over the question of school fees drive, child’s rough handling, name them- are completely eliminated or at worst, reduced to the barest minimum in online learning platforms.

You can see that many parents will readily opt for online learning solutions for their wards in the face of the coming catastrophe.

3 Reasons Why 21st Century Educators without a Tech Knowledge Are in a Big Mess





Have you heard about terms like digital native, tech savvy, tech education, digital classroom and all such stuff in recent times?


I am sure you have.

Those are terms that define the 21st century paradigm. Simply put, 21st century is changing how things are done in the past; there is a revolutionary change going on virtually in every area of human endeavor.

I want to believe you’re reading this post as an educator- someone who has something to offer others in terms of classroom delivery, professional training or any form of knowledge transmission. In whichever case, you need to read through this post with utmost concentration.

Now listen! Your job is at a great risk if you have not mastered the use of certain technology tools as a 21st century educator.

You probably had no problem with a tech-novice status some years back, but not today.

Let me show you 3 reasons why your tech-novice status is so dangerous, as a 21st century educator.


1.      Your tutees are of digital native, they can’t take anything less from a tutor.

We are living in a period where five-year olds are developing apps to solve complex problems. You don’t need to ask how they are able to master such- they are born for this century as much as this century is born for them. In what way then do you think you can profit them while still operating from the analog background? You would definitely lose your learners and then lose your job.



Don’t bother us with the rhetoric of, I have served this organization for a very long time, why must I be fired?
Friend, you’re being fired for becoming irrelevant, simple.

Think about it. If you’re a business owner or manager, how sane and profitable is it to your outfit keeping a man who is no longer delivering result just because he can’t measure up with the inevitable change in techniques and operational tools? Not even a long service status is enough to keep him.

You see why you can’t blame your boss for firing you. You just blame yourself for remaining adamantly conventional.


2.      Offline jobs are going into extinction; an upsurge in online job offer.

A lot of us are still busy complaining of government inability to stem the tide of rising unemployment across the globe.

But let me tell you this- no amount of complaint and reviews by even the most sincere government can completely solve the problem of unemployment. You know why? There is a global collapse in the macroeconomic structures, making it difficult to build and sustain offline jobs.

In fact, what we would rather record in the coming years is frequent job loss as many companies will collapse. Others might simply save cost by closing up their offline businesses while going online fully.

But then, here comes the goodness: while the offline jobs are fast collapsing, there is an astronomical upsurge in online job opportunities.

Goodness if you are tech savvy.

Bad news if you are not! 

How? You can’t work online without acquiring basic tech knowledge.


3.      The question of 21st century is, ‘What can you do?’ and not ‘What do you know?’

A lot of us possibly have multiple degree certificates, indicating we are knowledgeable enough in certain field and areas of study. But one thing is actually wrong with most of these our certificates.

What is that? Multiple degrees based on theoretical knowledge. I am sure you’ve come across a Mechanical Engineering graduate that can’t fix his car.

Mark Zuckerberg needed not to spend five years bagging a theoretical degree on Computer Science. He only needed to use his brain, identify a need, develop a workable solution and today, he is paid highly for it. He is being paid for his potentials and not for his credentials.

Do you notice today that some young men who spent only six months learning how to develop an app are making more money than you, possibly a professor who spent donkey years and millions of dollars acquiring multiple degrees?

What has really changed?

21st century is paying for potentials and not credentials; what you can do and not what you know.

That could as well be the reason why the weekly salary of Neymar Junior (a footballer) could settle a monthly salary of two Nigerian professors for 25 good years.

Your degree is good, but never good enough if you have no 21st century skill to back it up.

I have just warned you! Don’t remain a conventional educator who is irrelevant in today’s world.

6 Reasons Why Teaching in Africa is a Hard Nut to Crack


Being a teacher in Africa is one of the toughest jobs on earth. Had teaching not been a calling, a lot of African teachers wouldn’t had opted for the profession.


In Africa, very many factors make teaching a detestable profession that school children would be ready to scream ‘God forbid’ a million times anytime someone reminds them of pursuing a career in teaching. This ugly scenario might be same across the globe, but I think it’s more pronounced here in Africa.

Here are 6 of those factors that have led credence to this…

** Teachers are poorly paid here in Africa. Some mischievous souls would even suggest teachers go without pay as their reward is possibly in the afterlife. Imagine the psychological effect of teaching with little or no commensurate reward; it simply saps the inner strength of the teacher.


** There is a societal disdain for teachers in our own part of the world. The money-bag illiterate Politicians and others with ill-gotten wealth have more regard and are accorded better status than a university professor. Teachers’ work are not being appreciated.


** The learners’ attention has been diverted to entertainment, undue quest for ill-gotten wealth etc. As a result, a lot of school children show no genuine interest in ‘wasting’ their time learning for years while they can make money outside schooling. This makes teaching difficult for teachers in Africa.


** African leaders would rather invest money on beauty pageant where young ladies come to showcase their nudity and win millions of dollars, than give academic scholarship to deserving school children especially those in the ‘Brain without Books’ bracket.


** Technology-driven education is still at a yet-to-develop level here in Africa. Tech education tools are helping teachers across the globe to make teaching more interactive, engaging, fun and easier for both teachers and learners; but the typical African teacher is still struggling to do all things for himself and the school children, even in areas where technology should have helped.


** Too much workload on teachers. In some parts of Africa, an average teacher is meant to teach 4 to 5 subjects across three or more classes. She would write lesson notes, mark students’ homework and classwork, attend to the individual needs of over 30 children in her class, and produce mid-term and termly results, in addition to other extra commitments and pressure from the heads. In all these, nothing reflects in her remuneration.


** Conclusion:


The job of an average African teacher today can be equated to a humanitarian service. In spite of the challenges they go through to educate Africa and her children, they nonetheless keep doing that great job.


But, the truth is that we cannot continue like this and still hope to bequeath a better African future to our children. A situation where school children see teachers as the filth of the world, as well as show no interest in carving a niche in what they see as a forbidden career path, should be a thing of concern to African leaders and other stakeholders.


Africa has no future bright if her educational fortunes collapse; and collapse it will if nothing is done urgently to remedy the ugly plight of the African teacher. The work begins now…
