Creating an online
course is one skill every 21st century teacher should master to an
ultimate benefit.
Mind you! The
online course industry today is already a $200+ billion market, and a lot of
people are already making a buck out of it. Teachers have enough resources that
qualify them to be part of this global cake.
But then,
there are one or two things every online course creator must know in order to
excel in the game. For teachers, there are much more to know about online
course creation before one ventures into it.
This post is
a brief guide on 6 major things to
consider before going into online course creation.
1. Profession
When I say ‘profession’,
I am referring to your career path- that area you’re seen as an authority.
Now let me
make it clearer to you. Do you know there are many online courses today
offering different aspect of learning? In fact, whatever thing you want to talk
about has already been discussed by some other persons before now.
Does this
dampen your spirit? It should not. All I am trying to tell you is that there is
one thing your potential online audience want to know about you before they
trust you with their time, and possibly, money. What is that thing?
They want to
be sure you’re telling them what you know by experience and not just ‘copy and
paste’.
So, if you’re
a teacher, create a course that defines
your profession. That’s the only way they can trust you as an expert. Once they
repose such confidence in you, even if you teach ‘scrap’, they would still
consider it a scrap from an expert in the field.
Have you not
seen so many of such ‘scraps’ online and you wonder how on earth people are
rushing and paying for it.
Guess, you
understand now!
2. People
The people
here refers to your target audience. Be sure of this truism: there is no single
course that appeals to the whole world, no matter how important you think that
topic might be.
If you like,
create a course on ‘how to live’, the truth is that a lot of persons out there
are looking for ‘how to die’, so your course can never appeal to them.
Simply put,
narrow your target audience- those who truly need what you have to offer.
You must
know them as well as know how to locate them. That your target audience are
teachers does not mean that every teacher would be interested in your offer.
So, how do you locate the real people? CHECK IT UP HERE…
Now that you’re
ready- you’ve identified what you want to teach in your online course; you’ve
also located your target audience- how do you present your course to your
learners?
You’re
thinking! Is it going to be a membership course… or a video course (just send
them tutorial videos periodically)… or a multimedia combo (video, pdf
downloads, worksheet, videoconferencing etc).
So many
questions to ask here as you can LEARN FORM HERE.
4. Platform
Your online
course is not built on air. There must be a hosting platform.
Here again,
your target audience comes to mind. You don’t choose a platform just because it
appeals to you; you rather choose a platform because it’s going to offer both
convenience and coverage for your target audience.
There are
many wonderful online course platforms out there, such as Thinkific, Teachable,
Udemy, just to mention but a few.
But think
about this: if you’re tutoring locals and/or less digitally-literate persons,
do you think those platforms would be the best?
Another way
to look at it is this way: What platform should you go with when dealing with
those who are more digitally-enlightened?
One more
question: what if you have an audience made up persons with diverse interest
and status? Guess, you would cut one arm to retain the other?
5. Publicity
Your online
course is ready!
But nobody
knows about it… So, how do you get the word out there?
Do you think
by merely sharing links on all social media forums would be enough! Yes! You have
to do that, but that’s not enough. Your audience need a bait!

6. Profit
The question
here is: what do you intend to gain by creating your first online course?
Okay! Just
ask me: Chima, what do you intend to gain by creating a free online course?
If you ask this question on the
comment box, I will answer you
.
Yes! Some
courses are paid courses, so you know the course creator has possibly made
money. But what of those free courses you see everywhere online; what’s the
profit?
In fact, I
want you to create your first online course free.
But you
should never do that until you’re through with this FREE ONLINE COURSE.
You have to
consider all these points before going into online course creation as a
teacher.
